When working through trauma or any tough times, you need to equip yourself with everything you need to make the journey easier.
In other words, you need a support system.
There are a lot of things that this system will involve. But for now, I’d like to focus on one thing in particular…
Your supporting space.
Have you found a place where you feel safe and comfortable? If not, that’s what I’d like you to do as soon as you get a chance. This will be your sanctuary, which you can return to whenever you need to recharge and do your inner work.
Why is this so important?
First, it allows you to focus your undivided attention on yourself and the healing that you’re creating. It ensures that you don’t get disturbed while doing such important work.
Plus, it makes it more comfortable to do certain exercises. Many of those that I teach are verbal, so you’ll need some peace and solitude.
Your space can be something obvious, such as your bedroom. But this might not be possible, particularly with kids that are at home all the time, like mine are.
I couldn’t really go through those exercises until I found a space where sound couldn’t escape. It’s not that I had to scream or anything – I just wanted to make sure that I had a spot entirely to myself.
This is why I chose my closet as a supporting space. It might sound a bit unconventional, but it worked wonders for me.
The point is, it doesn’t matter what your supporting space is, as long as you have one.
When you find yours, see how you can make it as comfortable and peaceful as possible. Then, come back to that space regularly to focus on your healing.
It will make your whole journey so much more enjoyable.
