In a recent post (here), I explained that the last thing you want to do when dealing with trauma is to discount it. Remember that whatever you’re feeling is very real, and it’s your body’s way of processing trauma.
So if you ever feel like it’s not real or you’re making it up, know that this isn’t the case.
But there’s an idea you might consider as well…
You might be creating trauma.
You see, trauma isn’t always something that you receive, even though this is the case most of the time. Sometimes, though, you might play an active role in it.
Let me explain this with my own example.
I’m very much the creator of my trauma when it comes to going to the doctor. Instead of just going on day one, I wait a long time to do it.
In the meantime, a lot happens in my body and mind. I keep debating whether what I’m feeling is real or not. As a result, I get overwhelmed, frustrated, exhausted, and end up feeling horrible overall.
So by the time I go to the doctor, I end up crying in the office as I try to convey everything that I’m feeling.
This is a textbook example of reinforcing trauma. And there might be some situations in your life when you’re doing the same.
What can you do about it?
Well, I’ll tell you what I usually do.
It all comes down to reconnecting with your body.
You need to pause and take a closer look at what’s going on. Instead of getting overwhelmed, you should listen to what your body is saying.
When I reconnect in such a way, I get to see what is real and what isn’t. Moreover, I realize whether I’m creating my trauma or not.
You can do the same by simply tuning into your body. The clarity that you’ll achieve will make it so much easier to deal with trauma.
