Seeking Certainty

September 15, 20223 min read

If there’s a word that perfectly summarizes 2020, it’s uncertainty.

For many people, there has never been a period as challenging as the one we’re going through right now.

This isn’t to say that you’ve never faced uncertainty before. But something seems different this time, doesn’t it?

I’d like to explain why this is the case and what you can do about it.

As I said, you’ve likely faced uncertainty before. But you probably handled it much more easily than now.

Why?

It’s because you had a foundation of certainty underneath those uncertain situations. You didn’t have to worry about fundamentals, like your health or job security.

But now…

This foundation is deteriorating.

As a result, dealing with uncertainty is probably tougher than ever before.

The good news is that there’s a lot that you can do about this. You can still meet your needs for certainty so that you can enjoy this time regardless of its uncertainty.

But how?

First of all, think about what certainty means for you.

What does a certain day look like?

You might need physical certainty in terms of safety from the coronavirus. Or you might want to know that your kids will be safe. Whatever certainty means for you, define it clearly in your mind.

With that certainty defined, think about what you usually do to meet your need for it.

Perhaps you enjoy certain routines. You might love to organize and plan ahead. Or maybe just ensure that everyone around you is on the same page.

When you’ve answered this question, see how you can apply this to your definition of certainty.

What can you do now to create more certainty?

This will likely involve some thinking. But when you find a solution, you’ll see that you have a lot more control over this entire situation than you think.

Knowing you still have more control will make it easier to actually have fun with uncertainty instead of fearing it.
